I’ll get things started by sharing some thoughts about my mum, Elizabeth.
To the rest of the world she’s nothing special. She’s never appeared on TV or radio. She doesn’t run a business or a blog and although she’s worked hard all her life, she’s hasn’t achieved the type of career success we regularly pay homage to on this website. She’s just an ordinary woman who has lived an unremarkable life. But she’s an inspiration to me and I wish I could be more like her.
My mother is one of those smiling, happy people who laughs loud and often. She’s had a hard life and I know she worries about money, particularly now she has to survive on the aged pension. But she’s happy.
For as long as I can remember, my mother has been content with her lot in life and if she had any dreams for herself, she never let it be known that life has disappointed her. As someone who struggles with chronic depression and has lived under a constant cloud of melancholia, I can’t understand it. I can’t understand her sunny disposition, particularly after everything she has been through. I can tolerate life’s disappointments but I can’t rise above them the way she has managed to do. If our mothers are our teachers, I haven’t been a good student in this regard.
This isn’t to say that my mother is perfect. She’s made mistakes, both as a mother and as a human being. But what I admire most about Elizabeth is the fact that she has learned from her mistakes – a quality which has made it much easier for myself and my siblings to forgive her. It is because of her past mistakes that I haven’t always appreciated my mother as much as I do today. But as a daughter herself she understands this – she understands me.

To find out if your mum lives in Fresh Flowers’ delivery area please visit the website www.freshflowers.com.au and click on the link at the top of the page “Do we deliver in your area?”
2.2 Employees, contributors and immediate families of the promoter Australian Women Online and the prize sponsor Fresh Flowers and their associated agencies and companies are not eligible to enter.
2.3 Only one entry can be submitted per person. To enter you must provide a valid email address in the comments form below.
3. HOW TO ENTER
3.1 The competition commences on Friday 11th May 2014 at 5.00pm (AEST) and concludes on Friday 2nd May 2014 at 5.00pm (AEST) inclusive (“Competition Period”).
3.2 In order to enter, readers of Australian Women Online must “leave a comment” on this page of the website about why they would like to win this prize for their mum.
4. PRIZE
4.1 There will be one winner. The winning entry will receive a prize of mothers day flowers from Freshflowers.com.au delivered to their mother at an address nominated by the winner which is in Fresh Flowers delivery area.
4.2 The value of the prize is $120 (AUD).
4.3 The prize cannot be transferred.
5. HOW TO WIN
5.1 Tell us why your mother is special to you in the comments section of this web page. Entries should be no more than 300 words in length.
5.2 The person who submits the winning entry will be notified by email by no later than 9am (AEST) on Monday 5th May 2014 and must reply to this email by no later than 5.00pm (AEST) on Monday 5th May 2014. If the winner does not reply within this time frame another winner will be chosen.
5.3 The promoters decision is final and the promoters will not enter into correspondence regarding the result.
