This is a book dedicated to Christmas. It’s full of magical stories and memoirs about Christmases gone but not forgotten; family celebrations, festive food, glittering Christmas trees and above all, the arrival of Santa. There are fantasy stories like Count Stoneheart and the First Christmas Tree by Kate Forsyth, a traditional Russian Christmas legend retold by Sophie Masson, A Pirate Christmas by Helen Evans and some wonderful stories about Christmas in other countries. One of my favourites isSeason of Plenty by Rebecca Fung. Santa himself is telling this story; how he’s gorging on the chocolatey bikkies and milk left out for him, and even secretly raiding the plum pudding and candy canes in the cupboards and then having such trouble getting his big belly out of one of the chimneys. He’s a little worried that family might decide to light a fire!
As well as stories, there are poems and recipes and some beautiful colour plates by such illustrators as Kim Gamble and Ingrid Kellick.
