Photo: Brooke Holm A MAJOR international exhibition featuring two of the most significant artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei, is now open at the National Gallery of Victoria. Presenting the work of both artists, the exhibition explores modern and contemporary art, life and cultural politics through the activities of two exemplary figures – one of whom represents 20th century modernity and the “American century” and the other contemporary life in the 21st century and what has been heralded as the “Chinese century” to come. The exhibition features over 200 of Warhol’s most celebrated works including iconic pieces Campbell’s Soup, Mao, Elvis and Three Marilyns. A suite of major commissions by Ai Weiwei will also be premiered and presented alongside key works from the past four decades. The exhibition will present the most comprehensive representation of the artist’s work in Australia. The Andy Warhol/Ai Weiwei Exhibition was developed by the NGV and the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and will explore the significant influence of these two artists on modern art and contemporary life. The exhibition is on now until April 24, 2016, and will feature new commissions, immersive installations and a wide representation of the artists’ painting, sculpture, film, photography, publishing and social media.
