If you haven’t already seen Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s sexually candid and downright hilarious BAFTA Award-winning British TV series Fleabag, prepare to be both a little shocked and in stitches at the stage show – it certainly doesn’t hold back. Inspired by the likes of Lena Dunham and Nora Ephron, Fleabag explores the full range of what it means to be a woman and doesn’t sugarcoat it, which is very much part of the show’s charm.
Whilst Fleabag may make you a little uncomfortable – unsurprisingly so as these kinds of flawed, somewhat unlikeable female protagonists are not often represented in their barest, most unfiltered forms in the media – that is exactly what writer and actor Phoebe Waller-Bridge had in mind when putting together this shamelessly frank and uproariously hilarious one-woman show that was the foundation of the hit TV series. Phoebe has a gift for story-telling and is not afraid to admit that she relishes audience reaction – good, bad and ugly – because of her fascination with the taboo and what makes people tick.
Uncensored and unafraid to say what everyone is likely thinking, Fleabag (yes, that’s her name) suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose after the loss of her best friend to suicide. With her guinea pig-themed cafe struggling to keep afloat and her relationships with family and friends under strain, the twenty-something Londoner stumbles through a maze of social anxiety, disastrous job interviews and meaningless sex.
DryWrite and Soho Theatre are bringing the acclaimed stage production of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s cult hit to Brisbane Powerhouse. With British actor Maddie Rice taking the lead, Fleabag is about to take you on a journey by way of a cringe-worthy monologue that is filthily funny.
